The surplus votes of Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny, as expected, gave a massive boost to his running mates in Mayo tonight.

A transfer of 1,029 to Micheal Ring was enough to elect him on the second count with a total of 12,441 votes.

John O’Mahony received 675 votes, bringing him to 7,544 and closer to the quota of 11,898. Michael Ahern got 449 transfers with 5,877.

Former Fine Gael Deputy Beverly Flynn, who benefited by 352 of Enda Kenny’s transfers, could take the fifth seat set to take a seat, totalling 7,131 after the second count.

Alan Shatter - who lost out in 2002 after twenty years in the Dail - won the final seat in the constituency.
