Man dies in overnight fire at Mallow apartment block

A 34-year-old man has died in an overnight fire at an apartment block in Mallow, Co Cork.

The fire broke out at The Towers in Fairgreen just before midnight.

Local people managed to save a woman from the burning apartment, but were unable to get back inside due to dense smoke.

The dead man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The woman, who was in her 40s, was treated for smoke inhalation.

The scene will be technically examined this morning to establish the cause of the fire.
