PSNI question two over Belfast knife attack

Two men were being questioned today about a brutal knife attack which left the victim needing almost 200 stitches.

The suspects, aged 35 and 41, were detained in Belfast city centre last night.

Ciaran McAreavey needed a blood transfusion after being dragged from his girlfriend’s home in Turf Lodge on March 23 by two men who repeatedly slashed at him with knives.

He said in an interview from his hospital bed days after the attack that he thought the attackers intended to kill him.

“I was just lying in my bed and two guys came in with a knife and started carving me up in the bedroom.

“They trailed me from my heels out into the street and said they were going to make an example of me.

“They stood above me and started carving me.”
