Senior garda to investigate death 'in custody'
A senior garda has been appointed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of a man who was initially detained by Dublin gardaí on Tuesday night.
The 43-year-old, who was allegedly intoxicated at the time of his detention, died in hospital yesterday.
The man was detained after gardaí responded to a call for assistance from an ambulance crew on Dominic Street at around 7.30pm on Tuesday.
He was taken to Store St garda station for his own safety, but fell unconscious a short time later.
He died at the Mater hospital yesterday having never regained consciousness.
The State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy is expected to carry out a post mortem examination later today.
Garda superintendent Thady Muldoon, who is based outside the district, has been appointed to examine all aspects of the incident.
