A number of serving TDs are reportedly still receiving part of their salaries despite being involved in full-time politics for years.

Reports this morning say TDs like Labour's Brendan Howlin and Independent Tony Gregory are both being paid part of their teaching salary despite not setting foot in a classroom for almost 25 years.

A total of 20 serving TDs and Senators, including Minister for Education Mary Hanafin, are also continuing to hold onto their teaching jobs, preventing the posts from being permanently filled.

Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny only resigned his position 18 months ago after almost 30 years on leave.

Teachers elected to the Oireachtas are officially entitled to take paid leave of absence and to continue to chalk up pension benefits while they pursue their political careers.
