TDs to back youth vote campaign

The Dáil’s main political parties will support the Rock The Vote campaign today to urge more young people to exercise their franchise.

TDs from Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael, Labour, the Progressive Democrats, the Greens and Sinn Féin will pose for a photocall outside Leinster House.

Executive director of the campaign, Patrick Cosgrave said it was very important that all the parties show their backing for the initiative to boost the participation of young people in elections.

“This really helps to build on the support that we already have from people like comics like Dara O’Briain, Des Bishop and others who are participating in Rock The Vote videos”.

Mr Cosgrave said he was looking forward to hearing the parties discuss issues of importance to young people.

The Rock The Vote campaign will be officially launched in coming weeks in time for the general election campaign.

An information campaign as well as a list of gigs and events to encourage young people to vote will also be announced.

A public awareness roadshow will also visit cities, towns and college campuses around the country.
