Contact made with family of woman who 'abandoned baby'

Gardaí say they have made contact with the family of an Irish woman suspected of abandoning her baby in a public toilet in Australia.

Queensland police released CCTV images of the woman after the baby boy, aged between two and four weeks, was found wrapped in a towel at the Surfers Paradise resort on Monday morning.

Members of the public identified her as Irish and the police said they believed she had boarded a flight to Ireland.

Gardaí and the Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed today that they had made contact with her family, who have also been in touch with the Australian authorities.

The abandoned baby is understood to be in good health, but the Australian police say they are concerned for the welfare of the mother.
