A man was fighting for his life today after being attacked and beaten by several men in Dublin city centre.

Gardaí said the man, in his 30s, was set upon by a gang in Great Strand Street, behind Ormond Quay, at around 9.30pm last night.

He suffered serious head injuries and is in a critical condition in the Mater Hospital.

Meanwhile, gardaí were continuing to investigate another suspicious death during the weekend.

Detectives were trying to identify a young woman who was found dead in an alleyway in Longford town.

A dog walker found the woman at the back of an electrical store off Kilashee Street at around 8.30am on Sunday morning.

It is not known how long the body had been there.

She had suffered head and facial injuries and gardaí were investigating whether her death was linked to a break-in at the shop.

Detectives issued a description of the victim, saying she was in her late teens or early 20s, of small build and around 5ft with short brown hair.

She was wearing a navy LA Gear zip-up tracksuit top and matching bottoms. The jacket had pink piping, a pink waistband and badge on the left side with the number 75. She was also wearing a cream V-neck long-sleeved jumper.
