Struck off doctor loses appeal

A Co Cork doctor struck off after being found guilty of professional misconduct in relation to eight female patients, today lost his High Court appeal against the Medical Council’s decision.

Dr James Barry tricked people into becoming his victims and carried out acts for his own perverse gratification, the court ruled.

Barry was appealing against a ruling made by the Medical Council’s Fitness to Practise Committee last year which found the 81-year-old, of Lauriston Lodge, Glanmire, had conducted inappropriate examinations and made improper videos without patients’ knowledge.

In a lengthy 33-page judgment, which outlined the graphic allegations against Barry, Mr Justice Peter Charlton backed the committee’s finding.

“I am satisfied to the truthfulness of all of the witnesses in this case,” he said.

“This court affirms the decision of the Medical Council that Dr James M Barry has been guilty of gross misconduct with each of the eight patients.

“The court directs the erasure of Dr Barry’s name from the register of medical practitioners in Ireland.

Leaving Dublin’s Four Courts, the defiant medic said he has a huge body of patients supporting him, adding that this was not the end of his fight to clear his name.
