One of the three consultants who cleared Michael Neary of any wrong-doing in 1998 has resigned his position as President of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland.

One of the three consultants who cleared Michael Neary of any wrong-doing in 1998 has resigned his position as President of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland.

Dr John Murphy's resignation comes following a recent Medical Council finding of professional misconduct.

In a statement issued this afternoon, Dr Murphy said he had always endeavoured to act with honesty and integrity in his own professional life as an obstetrician and gynaecologist.

He went on to say that he could not let the recent findings of the Medical Council against him to compromise in any way the reputation of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland.
