The Labour Party is urging councillors in Co Cork to withhold permission for the planned redevelopment of the Mallow sugar factory until its former workers receive their redundancy payments.

Greencore has submitted plans for a €500m redevelopment of the site that would include 1,000 residential units, a luxury hotel and a wildlife park.

However, Labour TD Ruriri Quinn is calling on local councillors to deny permission for the scheme until the company pays redundancy money in line with Labour Court recommendations.

The workers are owed the money following the closure of the factory as part of reform of the EU sugar industry.
