Residents evacuated after suspected arson attack in Derry

Police in the North are investigating a suspected arson attack on a block of flats in Derry early today.

All residents were safely evacuated from the building off Little James S after a mattress was apparently set alight in a first-floor stairwell just before 6am.

The complex suffered extensive damage in the blaze.

A number of hours later, firefighters also extinguished two separate fires at an unoccupied house in the Strathfoyle area of the city.
