Couple questioned in connection with murder of pensioner

A man and woman were being questioned today about the murder of a pensioner at her home in the North.

Annie McCartan, 75, was beaten and stabbed to death in her house at Summer Hill in Warrenpoint, Co Down, in June.

The arrests came two weeks after the killing featured on the BBC Crimewatch programme with a reconstruction of the pensioner's last known movements.

Police have recovered a knife used in the murder and are looking for a second weapon.

Mrs McCartan had been shopping in Newry before getting the bus home during the afternoon of June 15.

She spoke to a school crossing patrol woman and a neighbour before walking up Summer Hill, arriving at her home at around 3pm.

Detectives believe she was preparing food in the kitchen when her killers struck.
