Dissidents 'called off recent plot to assassinate Gerry Adams'

Sinn Féin says dissident republicans planned to assassinate Gerry Adams recently, but called off the attack due to his security arrangements.

The party says the police have informed Mr Adams that dissidents were planning to shoot him, but were forced to cancel the plot due to the tight security surrounding the Sinn Féin president.

Last month, the party said it had been informed of threats to Mr Adams and other Sinn Féin leaders due to their imminent moves to endorse the PSNI.

Several dissident sources have denied any plans to kill the party leadership, but PSNI chief constable Hugh Orde says he believes Sinn Féin is right to treat the threats seriously.
