Man still held in relation to Kilkenny postmaster shooting

A man in his 20s is still being questioned today in connection with the fatal shooting of a 31-year-old postmaster in Kilkenny yesterday.

Alan Cunniffe, who gave chase to a lone armed raider, was shot in the stomach and died a short time later at St Luke's hospital.

A man was apprehended a short distance from the scene by gardaí, who also recovered a firearm and a quantity of cash.

The attack is being widely condemned, and is prompting opposition calls for an urgent review of security at the country's post offices.
