Taoiseach welcomes bishop’s comments on age of consent

The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, has said he welcomes the contribution of Catholic bishops to the debate on lowering the age of sexual consent.

The bishops say they are alarmed by proposals to reduce it from 17 to 16 years as part of reform of the statutory rape laws.
