Elderly to get 'keep warm' information packs

Forty thousand information packs are being made available from today to help older people take the necessary steps to keep warm this winter.

Between 1,500 and 2,000 more deaths occur here over the winter months than during the summer.

Age Action Ireland said cold weather, inadequate heating and poorly insulated homes play a part in many of these deaths.

And in a bid to prevent this the charity is supplying booklets, temperature cards and useful contact numbers to help them take the steps to stay well and warm.

“We are urging older people to ensure their homes are adequately heated this winter,” Age Action chief executive officer Robin Webster said.

“By taking basic steps, older people can ensure they stay well during the coming months.”

Some 16,300 pensioner households are expected to experience fuel poverty this winter spending more than 10% of income on heating the home.

Age Action also said research has shown when temperatures fall below 16C there is an increased risk of respiratory problems and if it drops below 12C there is an increased risk of stroke and heart attack.

The Stay Well and Warm campaign will also include radio and television ads and encourage relatives, neighbours and friends of older people to keep in regular contact with them.
