An inquiry into the conduct of three consultants who cleared Dr Michael Neary of wrongdoing in relation to his medical practices is due to get underway today.

Dr Neary was struck off the medical register just over three years ago due to concerns about the high number of wombs he removed at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda in the 1990s.

Earlier this year, a number of complaints were made to the Medical Council about three consultants who failed to raise concerns about his actions during a peer review.

The council is now conducting a fitness-to-practice inquiry into how these consultants reached their conclusions at a time when the Lourdes Hospital was carrying out 20 times more Caesarean hysterectomies than other maternity hospitals.
