Explosives and firearm found at side of road in Belfast

A quantity of explosives have been found along with a rifle and ammunition at the side of a road in west Belfast.

The items were found on the Upper Springfield Road last night, prompting a security alert that led to the temporary closure of the area.

The explosives are being forensically examined by police experts today.

The quantity recovered has not been disclosed, but it is understood to be relatively small.
