Hundreds of walks organised for World Heart Day

Ireland's number one killer heart disease is the highlight of World Heart Day today.

More than 400 walks are being organised across the country to mark the event.

Studies have shown that 30 minutes brisk walking a day can reduce the risk of heart disease by 18% and stroke by 11%.

“We're really aiming at families, friends and communities,” said event coordinator Tanya Comber.

“We're trying to get people to take their family and friends out for a walk today when they normally go for a walk. It's about getting kids off the sofa and bringing them out for a walk in a forest or on a beach.”
