A new study has found that many Irish women still lack knowledge about pregnancy and contraception.

One eighth of women involved in the research said they believe it is not possible to get pregnant the first time they have sex.

Elsewhere, more than half of those using birth control said they were taking the pill, but just one-in-eight were aware of its medical benefits.

The survey was commissioned by the drug company Schering to coincide with the launch of a new low-dose pill called Yasminelle.
