McDowell to be confirmed as new PD leader
Minister for Justice Michael McDowell is to be formally confirmed as the new leader of the Progressive Democrats later today.
In a deal worked out at the weekend, Mr McDowell was nominated for the job by his two potential leadership rivals, Liz O'Donnell and Tom Parlon.
Mr Parlon will become party president under the agreement, while Ms O'Donnell will become deputy leader.
Mary Harney will also remain on as Minister for Health.
Ms O'Donnell, who was regarded as a contender for the leadership, said last night that she did not want a divisive contest so close to an election.
"Very early on, I opened up discussions with Michael McDowell and with Tom Parlon with a view to agreeing a candidate who could unify the party as we go forward towards an election," she said.
