Web users to get Oireachtas link-up

A new initiative to encourage the public to take part in the works of the Dáil is to be launched today.

The pilot scheme gives web users the power to engage directly on matters of the Oireachtas.

For the first time in the history of Parliament, the general public can read and give views on departmental proposals and, at a later stage, see the views expressed being considered and actively participate in discussion.

The Joint Committee on Communications, Marine and Natural Resources will be the first to use the innovative program when considering proposals in relation to broadcasting.

Committee chairman Noel O’Flynn said: “This demonstrates the desire and commitment of both Parliament and the Joint Committee to engage more directly with the public.”

A nationwide advertising campaign will promote the groundbreaking on-line scheme, which people can access by visiting www.econsultation.ie from noon today.
