Charity workers begin trek for homeless

Two charity workers will today begin an 80-mile trek to highlight the plight of homeless people across Ireland.

Dublin women Joan Nevin and Paddy Pender will complete the gruelling journey from Monaghan back to the capital with no money, food, drink or shelter.

The pair, who work at Capuchin Day Centre, will instead survive solely on the generosity of people along the route.

“There are hundreds of reasons why people are homeless,” said Ms Nevin, a clinical nurse.

“We want to highlight the issues and prejudices around homelessness and show its not just a Dublin problem. It affects all walks of life.”

The walkers also hope to raise funds for the Bow Street centre, which supports homeless people and those in the inner city who cannot cook for themselves.
