Road and rail links closed following bomb alert

Security alerts today forced the closure of the main road and rail links between the Republic and the North of Ireland.

The main Newry to Dublin road has been sealed off following a bomb warning. The railway line has been closed all weekend because of a Real IRA dissident republican warning.

The alarm follows the firebombing of a number of Newry businesses earlier this week that caused serious damage to the area's economy.

Army technical officers were today called to a bridge between the Five Ways roundabout and the Forthill road near Newry. The road is expected to remain closed for much of the day.
