A 25-year-old man was arrested today following a fatal stabbing in Cork city.

A 25-year-old man was arrested today following a fatal stabbing in Cork city.

Detectives from Mayfield garda station made the arrest shortly before 8am and he is being held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

He can be questioned for up to eight hours.

The incident happened in the Farranree area in the north of the city in the early hours of this morning.

A 27-year-old man was found seriously injured in a house in Fairfield Square at around 2am.

It is understood he had suffered a number of stab wounds and was rushed to Cork University Hospital but died a short time later.

The scene has been preserved and garda technical officers are carrying out a forensic examination. A post-mortem will also be carried out today.
