Energy review to recommend new nuclear plants in Britain
A review due to be published by the British government today is expected to recommend the construction of a new generation of nuclear power stations.
The review is understood to recommend the construction of six new nuclear plants to meet Britain’s future energy needs.
The Irish Government has already said it will oppose any plans to expand the use of nuclear power in Britain.
Speaking this morning, Tony Lowes of Friends of the Irish Environment said such a move could be "catastrophic" for Ireland in the event of a Chernobyl-type disaster.
"What happened in Ukraine was a horror story and it will happen again if we go down this road," he said.
