Committee seeks increased adult literacy funding
The Oireachtas Committee on Education and Science is calling for increased funding to help tackle adult literacy problems in Ireland.
In a report published today, the committee says funding should be raised to €125m by 2013 with the aim of halving the number of people at the lowest level of literacy by 2021.
Recent studies have found that a quarter of Irish adults are at the lowest level of literacy, meaning they would have difficulty reading the directions on a packet of aspirin.
