Police in the North tonight arrested the driver of a car involved in a fatal road crash which claimed the lives of four people.

Police in the North tonight arrested the driver of a car involved in a fatal road crash which claimed the lives of four people.

The 19-year-old was being questioned about an accident which occurred on the Moorlough Road near Lisnaskea, Co Fermanagh.

The front seat passenger was also 19. Both men, believed to be from Newtownbutler, managed to get out of the wreckage and were taken by ambulance to the Erne Hospital in Enniskillen.

The four young people who died, who were crammed into the back of a green Honda Civic which struck a tree, were 16-year-old Anita Swift from Newtownbutler, 17-year-old Danica Mary O’Rourke from Lisnaskea, 21-year-old Peter Seamus Leonard also from Lisnaskea and 21-year-old Jonathan McDonald from Newtownbutler.

The tragedy today left the communities of Lisnaskea and Newtownbutler in a deep shock. Floral tributes were laid at the scene of the accident by friends and relatives of those killed.

Nationalist and unionist also expressed the grief felt in Co Fermanagh as a result of the tragedy.

Meanwhile, a motorcyclist was killed in a crash with a car outside Castlewellan in Co Down.

The collision took place on the Bann Road between Castlewellan and Banbridge shortly after 4.30pm.
