Harney planning legislation to control use of sunbeds
The Tánaiste and Health Minister Mary Harney has announced plans to introduce legislation controlling the use of sunbeds.
The move is part of a package of measures announced by Ms Harney today to reduce the incidence of cancer in Ireland.
Sunbeds are known to increase the risk of skin cancer. Their use has been rising steadily among the Irish population in recent years.
Under the proposals announced by Ms Harney today, it will be illegal for children under the age of 16 to use sunbeds, while regulations governing the safe use of sunbeds will also be introduced.
Elsewhere, Ms Harney said free cervical cancer screening services would be expanded nationwide by 2008.
Ms Harney also said she had asked the new board to advise her on the implementation of a colorectal cancer screening programme.
In addition, she said, four new “cancer control networks” would be developed around the country to improve the management of cancer services.
