Over 80,000 children miss 20 or more days of school a year
New figures reveal over 80,000 children in this country miss more than 20 days of school a year.
The National Education Welfare Board says the problem is worse in disadvantaged areas, with one-in-five pupils missing up to 40 school days each year.
The NEWB is appealing to parents to ensure their children don't any miss school unless absolutely necessary.
Spokesperson Eileen Fahy said continued absence is an early indicator that the child will possibly drop out of school early.
âWe really would have great concerns about children who are absent on a regular basis, which makes it extremely difficult for them to stay in the system,â she said.
