Government accused of breaking nursing home vow

The Irish Nursing Homes Organisation has accused the Government of breaking its promise on improving nursing home standards.

The accusation comes a year after the exposure of abuse and neglect at the Leas Cross nursing home in Swords, Co Dublin.

Taoiseach Bertie Ahern promised to create an independent body to inspect all nursing homes by the end of 2005.

However, the INHO says this has still not happened.
