A Polish family is moving out of their home in the Waterside in Derry after they were targeted in a racist attack at the weekend.

A Polish couple, their two-year-old son and four other relatives were in the house on Emerson St when three masked men armed with a hatchet and iron bar forced their way in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The occupants barricaded themselves in a bedroom while the gang ransacked several rooms and smashed the stairs, the doors, a television, a bath and furniture.

The PSNI has said it believes the attack was racially motivated.
