Leading cancer group calls for improvements in services

A leading European cancer group says it’s imperative that cancer services in this country are improved.

Europa Donna says women's lives are being put at risk because the existing services are not of a high enough standard.

It is highlighting the Breastcheck scheme as a prime example.

The screening programme still has not been rolled out nationwide and women in the south will be waiting at least another year until the scheme comes on line.

The group is calling on the Minister for Health to improve existing breast cancer services in Ireland to bring it in line with other European countries.

Spokeswoman Frances Fitzgerald believes the services will come on stream

Speaking today she said: “This is about resources and political will. These resources have to come on stream because this is what women need if they are diagnosed with breast cancer.”
