The Government expects to publish 16 bills in the next Dáil session, which begins tomorrow.

Among the bills are the Road Traffic and Health Bills as well as the Defamation Bill, the Privacy Bill and the Childcare (Amendment) Bill.

Government Chief Whip Tom Kitt said there were also 24 pieces of legislation before the Dáil, including the Health (Nursing Homes) (Amendment) Bill 2006, the Health (Repayment Scheme) Bill 2006, the Building Control Bill 2005, the Parental Leave (Amendment) Bill 2004 and the Employment Permits Bill 2005.

Mr Kitt said: "Since taking office we have published 147 bills and enacted 148 separate pieces of vital legislation. This pace of legislative reform ensures that the Government is well on target to deliver on its commitments in the Agreed Programme for Government."
