A young Limerick woman was killed in a tragic road accident in Spain at the weekend while holidaying with her mother.

A young Limerick woman was killed in a tragic road accident in Spain at the weekend while holidaying with her mother.

Ciara Leahy, aged 20, from Patrickswell, Co Limerick, and formerly of Lower Church Road, Raheen, was holidaying near the popular Spanish resort of Alicante when tragedy struck.

While details of the accident still remain unclear, its understood the 20-year-old's mother Josephine was also travelling in the same car.

She is still recovering in hospital from injuries she suffered in the accident which claimed her daughter's life.

According to family sources Mrs Leahy's husband Tommy, travelled to Spain afer learning the tragic news and is trying to make arrangements to bring his daughter's remains home.

The fatal accident is understood to have taken place last Friday but it may be a number of days before Ciara's body is returned home for burial.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the Irish Embassy in Spain has been assiting the Leahy family.

"The Embassy is aware of this case and is assisting the family in every way possible," she said.
