Majority oppose older people being forced to sell homes

Research by the ESRI has reportedly found that a significant majority of people are opposed to older people having to sell or remortgage their homes to help pay for their long-term care.

Reports this morning said the measure was one of a number of options being considered by the Government as part of its plans to draw up a new long-term care strategy.

The ESRI opinion poll reportedly found that 60% of adults are opposed to the scheme.

The Tánaiste and Minister for Health Mary Harney has also reportedly ruled out any move to force older people to sell their homes to pay for nursing care.

However, she has said that some families will have to contribute towards the cost of residential care for elderly relatives.

This morning's reports said the Government favoured a means-test system to determine who should have to pay and who should receive free care.
