Motorists using the M50 around Dublin are being warned to expect disruption from today due to major works getting underway on one the busiest stretches of the ring-road.

Extra lanes are being added between the Red Cow Roundabout and the N4 Lucan interchange as part of an upgrade that also includes the installation of barrier-free electronic toll booths.

The work could take up to five years to complete.

The AA has said the improvements are necessary and long overdue, but motorists are likely to face enormous disruption during the construction phase.
