FG MEP seeks independent investigation of LUAS problems

Fine Gael MEP Gay Mitchell is calling for the Oireachtas transport committee to investigate problems with the LUAS tracks in Dublin.

A series of studies has uncovered problems with the binding material beneath the tracks, with one report concluding that complicated new concrete supports will have to be manufactured in order to rectify the situation.

The Railway Procurement Agency, however, is insisting that the repairs will cause no disruption for passengers and will be paid for by the construction firm that built the tracks rather than the taxpayer.

Despite this, Mr Mitchell said the whole issue needed to be clarified through an independent investigation.

"I don't accept that an agency which transports the public should find in its own favour," he said. "I think that the people who should examine this matter are the elected representatives of this country."
