Gerry Kelly: Political policing continues in PSNI

Sinn Féin have said political policing continues apace within the PSNI.

It is also criticising the North's Policing Board accusing it of failing to end collusion.

But policing spokesperson Gerry Kelly says he does believe change is possible.

Sinn Féin's Gerry Kelly claims the RUC Special Branch is still active within the PSNI and that the Policing Board has done nothing to stop political policing.

That includes policing of Loyalist marches, what's happened to police files on Republicans, and politically-motivated house raids and arrests.

But, he says, it is possible to achieve a new policing dispensation.

The key is to transfer policing and justice powers to the political institutions in the North.

The British government is due to publish legislation and a detailed consultation paper on the issue.

Mr Kelly says Republicans won't accept anything less than the new beginning promised in the Good Friday Agreement.
