Farmers must become guardians of the countryside to ensure that endangered flora and fauna and national monuments survive, it was claimed today.

The National Heritage Council called on the Government to ensure that the next phase of the Rural Environmental Protection Scheme (REPS-4) beginning in 2007 should incorporate new measures to manage the habitats of threatened birds and plants.
