Investigation launched after man dies in garda station

A 40-year-old man has died overnight in Monaghan garda station.

According to gardaí, the man was arrested for an undisclosed offence shortly after 1.30am today.

They say he was found in an unconscious state in his cell about one hour later.

Efforts to resuscitate the man failed and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

His body has been removed to Cavan General Hospital where a post mortem is to be carried out.
