PSNI step up patrols after fire bomb threat

Police are to increase patrols amid fears of incendiary bomb attacks in Northern Ireland, it emerged tonight.

Seniors officers urged the public to be extra vigilant after a number of real and hoax devices were dealt with across the North.

Assistant Chief Constables Duncan McCausland and Peter Sheridan said they were aware that some elements of society were intent on causing destruction and disruption.

“We have particular concerns about the risk of incendiary attacks against businesses in the run up to Christmas,” they said.

“We have already dealt with a number of real and hoax devices recently and these attacks not only put lives at risk, they threaten businesses, they threaten jobs and affect us all.

“We would urge everyone to look out for anything suspicious. If you see something that looks out of place, or even just raises concern, report it immediately to the police.

“We would also advise business owners and managers to review security measures and to check their premises thoroughly both during and after trading. Again we would urge shoppers to report anything suspicious immediately.”

The officers confirmed extra patrols would be on the streets of Northern Ireland in the run up to Christmas.

“We hope that increased police activity will work to disrupt criminals and help ensure that Northern Ireland is a safer place to live, work and, importantly at this time of year, to shop,” they said in a joint statement.

“But we cannot do this alone and we would appeal to everyone to assist us.”
