The government has given the green light for upgrade plans on Dublin's Tallaght Luas line.

Under the plans, the length of each Luas carriage will be increased by ten metres, thereby boosting passenger capacity by 40%.

Work is expected to begin in 2007 and will be completed the following year.

The Department of Transport said today that there would be no interruption to services during the upgrade.
