FG MEP seeks greater control of cigarette chemicals
Fine Gael MEP Avril Doyle has called for the contents of cigarettes to be included in a proposed new EU law on the control of chemicals.
The European Parliament is due to vote tomorrow on proposed legislation that would see greater controls imposed on certain chemical substances.
The law, which is being opposed by industry groups, could lead to some substances being banned from the EU.
Ms Doyle said cigarettes contained more than 2,000 chemicals and these should be included in the new law as existing tobacco control regulations only deal with tar, nicotine and carbon monoxide.
