Report into Leas Cross death to be published today

A report into the death of a 61-year-old man at Leas Cross nursing home in north Co Dublin is due to be published today.

Peter McKenna, who had Downs Syndrome and Alzheimer's Disease, died 13 days after being transferred to the home in September 2000 against his family wishes.

The transfer was implemented by St Michael's House, a disability centre where he had been receiving care for 23 years.

The report into Mr McKenna's death, which has already been given to his family, criticises his treatment by Leas Cross, the former Northern Area Health Board and St Michael's House.

Speaking after a meeting with Tánaiste and Minister for Health Mary Harney yesterday, the dead man’s brother said he had been promised the report would be made public today.

He also said he would not stop until those responsible for pushing through the transfer of his brother were held responsible.
