Local residents to protest against planned sewage plant

Residents of the Co Dublin village of Portrane are planning a demonstration this afternoon to oppose the construction of a sewage treatment plant in their area.

Fingal County Council is expected to approve the multi-million euro regional facility, which would cater for more than 750,000 people.

Local residents say they have no problem with a much smaller plant that would cater only for the local population.

Spokesperson Valerie Henderson said: "There is a proposal for a 65,000-capacity plant which would cater for Donabate, Portrane, Lusk and Rush.

"We say that's fine, that's our fair share, we're prepared to take that. Other than that, we don't want it."
