Burglaries cost Irish households almost €60m every year, according to a survey published today by Eircom Phonewatch.

The company said the survey found that goods worth €3,600 were stolen during an average burglary, with most thefts taking place between midnight and 4am.

It also said 60% of break-ins occurred while occupants were inside the house, with the rear of the house the most popular point of entry.

Dublin is the most burgled area in the country, followed by Cork and Wicklow.
