UDA leader arrested during crackdown on organised crime

Police in the North have arrested five people, including a leader of the Ulster Defence Association, during an operation against loyalist paramilitaries in Belfast today.

Police in the North have arrested five people, including a leader of the Ulster Defence Association, during an operation against loyalist paramilitaries in Belfast today.

Andre Shoukri, the UDA leader in north Belfast, was among four men and a woman detained during raids in the north and east of the city by police investigating organised crime.

The other detainees are believed to include at least one other senior UDA figure.

A PSNI search operation is continuing in the Westland Row area in north Belfast, while another is underway in Castlereagh in the east of the city.

One person has also been taken into the PSNI witness protection scheme as part of the operation.
