2,000 abused children taken into State care in 2003
Figures compiled by the Department of Health have reportedly revealed that around 2,000 children were taken into State care in 2003 due to evidence of abuse within their families.
Reports this morning said almost 1,500 of these children were admitted into care due to neglect, while much smaller numbers had suffered physical, sexual and emotional abuse.
The reports said parental substance abuse, mental health problems and an inability of parents to cope with children were also accounting for a significant number of admissions to State care.
The total number admitted to care in 2003 was more than 5,500, up from 2,700 in 1989.
Social workers claim the increase is a symptom of under-funding for support services and a lack of adequate intervention for troubled families.
